The David Wiley Trades Scholarship
Mission Statement:
The David Wiley Trades Scholarship supports dedicated students who are pursuing careers in the skilled trades. Inspired by David Wiley’s commitment to service and community development, this award encourages technical excellence, hard work, and community engagement among future trades professionals.
Scholarship:
To honor the legacy and community commitment of David Wiley by supporting students pursuing careers in the skilled trades. The scholarship recognizes hardworking individuals who are contributing to their community and preparing for careers in construction, manufacturing, automotive services, diesel mechanics, electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, machining, or other certified trade programs.
Scholarship Overview
Award Amount:
One Award of $2,500 annually (adjustable based on funding)
Eligibility:
Be a high school senior or current post-secondary student enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in an accredited vocational school, community college, technical institute, or apprenticeship program in a trade field.
Be a member of the Northern Lights Federal Credit Union or have a parent/guardian/family member who is a member.
Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 (or equivalent) – emphasis on commitment and potential over academic excellence alone.
Demonstrate financial need and/or community involvement.
Be pursuing a credential, certificate, license, or apprenticeship in a recognized trade program.
Important Dates:
Applications Open: March 1
Deadline to Apply: May 15
Recipient Announced: June 15
Award Distributed: August 1 (to school or program directly)

Essay (500-750 words):
- Describe your chosen trade, what inspired you to pursue the trade, and how your education or training will impact your community.
Resume or Activities List:
- Work experience
- Volunteer/community service.
- Trade-related projects or certifications
Transcript or Proof of Enrollment/Acceptance:
Unofficial transcript accepted
At Least One letter of Recommendation:
(From educator, employer, mentor, or community leader.)
Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Academic standing/enrollment verification 10%
Selection Committee:
Comprised of NLFCU Board, Staff and if desired family or colleague of David Wiley.
The committee will be comprised of no less than 3 members and no more than five members
Award Announcement & Recognition:
- Winners will be notified by email and announced on NLFCU website and social media.
- Recipient invited to a public announcement.
